It’s not as exciting as you MIGHT think.
I, purposely, WENT TO A DONUT SHOP.
Historically I don’t like donuts. Yes. I was that freak kid who didn’t like them when they were set up in the milking barn at my grandmother’s farm for coffee hour.
While my cousins and sister happily munched donuts I watched, wishing I liked them. I was a weird kid, thankyouverymuch. There were SO many things I wouldn’t or “couldn’t” eat. Now I’m generally fine with most of the things “I didn’t like” and I get plenty of sh*t from my kids over the things I didn’t eat as a kid. Why did I ever tell them??
ANY WAY BACK TO THE STORY
There’s a new donut shop in the Valley and everyone has been buzzing about it. Mainly because they got an early start on social media and have documented the starts and stops of getting a business up and running. There were plenty of setbacks along the way but eventually, they opened this week. And I just happened to be making an early morning drive TO Wasilla so I HAD TO GO. Right?? In the name of investigative reporting (and being nosy) I stopped in,
I don’t know their ACTUAL physical address but it’s RIGHT where Wasilla Lake empties into Cottonwood Creek, there at the hot springs?? Yep. If you’re old-time Alaska, right where Green Acres USED to be.
(I looked it up for you, the address is 2201 East Palmer Wasilla Highway)
I stopped in at 8:30 am and they were almost FULLY stocked. As I’ve grown up, I have become more fond of Old Fashioned Donuts, and they had more than SIX flavors of Old Fashioneds.
After perusing the cases, yes TWO cases, I decided I needed to do an Old Fashioned Taste Test. So I bought 6 of them: glazed old fashioned, maple glazed old fashioned, chocolate glazed old fashioned, chocolate glazed chocolate old fashioned, chocolate glazed marbled old fashioned with coconut, German chocolate frosted marbled old fashioned.
Hands down, for me, the German Chocolate was the BEST of the bunch. BUT NONE OF THEM WERE BAD.
Besides donuts, they have a full coffee and espresso bar PLUS they serve lunch. So I am GOING BACK for more donuts and probably lunch at some point.
If you want to see my taste test it’s on Instagram
If you’re coming to Alaska, live here, or you’re planning a dream trip I THINK Holy Moley Donuts should be on your list of places to visit.
Loved all the pastries, pancakes and waffles we ate in small shops in our 2004 visit to your great state.
